AVO vs PR

PR earns the headline. AVO becomes the citation.

AI Visibility Optimisation vs traditional PR: how UK brands engineer AI citations alongside earned media.

Public relations and AI visibility optimisation share a working assumption (third-party voice carries weight) and almost nothing else. PR optimises for human readers. AVO optimises for the model reading the corpus of evidence about you.

    PR

    Humans

    the audience

Coverage is the artefact. Narrative pitches earn placement. Measurement is share of voice and AVE - bound to the news cycle.

    AVO

    Models

    the audience

Corroborated structured signal is the artefact. Verifiable references compound. Measurement is selection probability - durable, accretive.

    PR and AVO, working together.

The strongest programmes treat the two as complementary. PR creates the opportunities. AVO makes those opportunities legible, durable and citable for the AI systems your buyers now consult before they ever hear of you.

    PR earns

    Coverage, briefings, narrative.

    AVO encodes

    Structured, parseable, consistent reference.

    Both compound

    Each citation strengthens model confidence.

    Common questions.

Does PR coverage influence what AI models recommend?

Yes, when the coverage is relevant, independently published, crawlable and consistent with the rest of the brand's public information. A mention alone is not a guarantee: AI systems assess the source, context, corroboration and fit with the user's question.

    Does AVO replace PR?

No. PR remains the discipline that builds reputation with humans: journalists, customers, communities. AVO is the discipline that makes a business legible and citable to AI systems. Done well, they reinforce each other; done in isolation, they each leave a gap.

Doesn't AI just read whatever PR coverage we already have?

Partially. AI systems weight third-party sources, but they require structured, verifiable, consistent signal. A scattered set of mentions in inconsistent forms is far weaker signal than a coherent corroboration architecture, which is what AVO constructs.

We've spent heavily on PR. Why aren't we recommended by AI?

Because PR coverage and AI corroboration are not the same artefact. Coverage is narrative; AVO requires structured, parseable, consistent reference. Most PR programmes do not optimise for the latter, and most AI engines weight the latter heavily.

Who owns AVO inside an organisation?

Most often a senior marketer working alongside the existing PR and SEO functions. AVO is a discipline that draws on both but reports to neither. It needs its own scoring instrument and its own brief.

Will AVO cannibalise our PR budget?

It should not. The two should be complementary lines on the same plan. Where overlap exists, AVO informs which PR moves are most likely to compound into AI corroboration.
